How Invisalign Works at Elmbrook Family Dental

At Elmbrook Family Dental, we take precise digital impressions and integrate 3D technology to plan how your teeth will shift. This detailed mapping is used to create a custom series of aligners that guide your teeth into place. You’ll wear the aligners day and night, except when eating or brushing, and you’ll follow a provided schedule for switching aligners.

As you advance through each aligner, your teeth will move into their desired alignment. While treatment generally takes about 12 months, many of our patients at Elmbrook Family Dental complete theirs in a shorter timeframe. When your treatment is finished, you’ll need a retainer to keep your teeth from moving back to their original position.

Invisalign is highly effective for a range of bite and alignment problems, but you’ll first need a consultation to ensure it’s the right solution for you. Sticking to your aligner schedule is essential for successful treatment.

If you’re ready to achieve a beautifully straight smile, contact Elmbrook Family Dental today to find out if clear braces in Wauwatosa are the perfect fit for you.

Who Can Invisalign Help?

Determining your eligibility for Invisalign requires a scheduled consultation with Dr. Taibl. By evaluating your orthodontic problems, he can define whether the severity of your case can be treated using clear aligners. Does Invisalign fix overbite? Can these trays close gaps between teeth? These questions are common among interested patients and will be answered accordingly when meeting with Elmbrook Family Dental’s Invisalign expert, Dr. Taibl.

Crowded Teeth

Crowded set of teeth

Crowded teeth can be hard to clean, as a lack of space makes it difficult to brush and floss. The result can include dental decay, cavities, and gum disease. However, with Invisalign, the pressure from the aligners can shift teeth so they appear in a straight line, making your oral hygiene routine easier and more effective. What you see at the end of treatment is a more properly aligned, healthier smile.

Gaps Between Teeth

If you have a large gap between your teeth, Invisalign can address the problem by moving teeth closer together. This reduces the chances of bacterial accumulation and trapped food debris that might otherwise cause cavities, gum disease, and inflammation. If the gap is smaller, Dr. Taibl may suggest direct bonding or veneers to conceal the space and generate a more pleasing visual appearance.

Overbite

Treating an overbite means reducing the potential of jaw pain and enamel erosion over time. Instead of turning to traditional orthodontics, our team can recommend Invisalign. The clear aligners can shift the upper row of teeth back to align with the lower arch, creating improved oral function that takes the pressure off existing teeth and generates a healthier, more attractive smile.

Underbite

An underbite can develop because of genetics or non-nutritive habits during childhood, but it can be treated with Invisalign and the inclusion of elastic bands or similar attachments. Instead of the upper teeth sitting inside the lower arch, your lower jaw will move accordingly so that both rows come together appropriately without causing any pain or potential damage. If additional appliances are required, Dr. Taibl will incorporate them at the onset of treatment.

Crossbite

Crossbite with teeth overlapping

A smile that causes the upper and lower rows of teeth to overlap is considered to have a crossbite. This form of malocclusion can be treated with Invisalign by encouraging protruding teeth to move back, creating better alignment. If poor jaw development is the reason for your crossbite, though, clear aligners will still be used, but in addition to other services.

Open Bite

Front upper and lower teeth not touching

Teeth that touch toward the back of your mouth but not in the front are not a problem for Invisalign. An open bite can be addressed with staging, which is the process of moving certain teeth at different times. Over time, your teeth will come together fluidly, creating a more cohesive and functional bite that does not cause wear and tear or jaw pain. Instead, you can expect greater confidence when smiling.

Invisalign vs. Metal Braces

Metal braces are a common solution for orthodontic concerns because they are effective for treating even the most complex cases. Brackets and wires gradually pull the teeth into their ideal positions. Although they offer predictable results, they are noticeable and have several disadvantages, like dietary restrictions.

Invisalign is different because it does not use brackets or wires. Instead, custom-fit aligners worn over your teeth gradually move them. Clear aligners offer an ideal cosmetic dental solution with a virtually undetectable treatment and also resolve the common complaints of metal braces.

Practically Invisible, Totally You

One of the top reasons patients choose Invisalign is its low profile. These clear trays are nearly invisible, so you can smile with confidence throughout your treatment. Whether you're at school, work, or a special event, no one will even notice you're wearing them.

At Elmbrook Family Dental, we believe orthodontic treatment shouldn’t interrupt your smile or cause undue stress.

A Smoother Fit for Everyday Life

Invisalign trays are made from smooth, durable plastic, so you won’t experience the poking and irritation often caused by metal braces. Because each aligner is custom-fitted to your teeth, they’re comfortable to wear day and night. This means you can focus more on enjoying life and less on your smile.

Fewer Visits, More Freedom

Busy schedule? No problem. You’ll get all your aligners at the beginning of your treatment. Unless we need to create space between your teeth through a process known as interproximal reduction (IPR), you won’t need to return to our Barker Road office until you’ve completed all your aligners.

Clean Teeth, Happy Gums

Because Invisalign aligners are removable, it’s easy to keep up with your regular brushing and flossing routine. That means fewer issues with plaque, tartar, and gum irritation during treatment. At our Barker Road dental practice, we’ll show you how to keep both your aligners and your smile sparkling clean without hassle.

Smile with Confidence—Even During Treatment

Fits Right into Your Life

While traditional braces can be rough and require some lifestyle changes, Invisalign allows you to live out loud. Eat your favorite foods, converse with confidence, and take all the selfies you want without worrying about a “metal mouth” bringing you down. With these clear aligners, you won’t have to change your lifestyle to fit them—they’ll just fit right in.

Understanding the Cost of Invisalign

One of the biggest questions we hear is how can Elmbrook Family Dental provide so much more than anyone else while costing so much less? After completing advanced education with the American Academy of Clear Aligners, including an exclusive mentorship program that only accepts a handful of dentists each year, Dr. Taibl is offered discounts from Invisalign well beyond what many other dentists will receive, and because he enjoys making people smile with Invisalign, he chooses to pass those savings along to you.

Although it isn’t the only factor, the cost of your treatment is certainly something that will influence whether or not Invisalign is the right teeth-straightening solution for you. While it’s impossible to give you an accurate price estimate without a consultation, we can share what influences the final answer. So, keep reading to learn the factors that affect the cost, options for making Invisalign affordable, and more!

Factors That Affect the Cost of Invisalign

One of the reasons the initial consultation is so important is because Invisalign isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment. On the contrary, it’s completely tailored to each patient’s unique dental needs and smile goals. Factors like the severity of your misalignment, whether you need to straighten one arch of teeth or both, and your age need to be considered upfront. Of course, once you begin your clear aligner journey, something else will come into play: your compliance with the treatment guidelines. After all, neglecting to follow the “rules,” like the 22-hour-a-day wear-time, can cause you to fall off-track with your original plan, which may necessitate a larger investment of your time and money.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Invisalign?

Some dental insurance providers do cover Invisalign! So, double-check the fine print on your dental plan before automatically assuming that’s not the case. If you are having trouble understanding your benefits or would like to learn more about your out-of-pocket investment, then don’t hesitate to ask our team so we can help make the process of utilizing your benefits as easy as possible.

Options for Making Invisalign Affordable

If you are uninsured, then you’ll be happy to know that dental insurance isn’t the only financial solution available. Our team is proud to also welcome CareCredit! CareCredit is a third-party financier that has several payment plans available, some of which have little-to-no interest attached. Perhaps even better, it only takes a few clicks to sign up.

Invisalign Frequently Asked Questions

Are you wondering what life with Invisalign aligners will be like? Straightening your teeth using trays instead of metal braces offers a variety of benefits, including discretion and comfort. With Invisalign clear braces, you’ll be able to improve orthodontic issues faster and without the added hassle that comes with traditional brackets and wires. For your convenience, we’ve answered some common questions we receive from patients below.

Does it hurt to wear Invisalign aligners?

One of the most common questions our patients ask us before they commit to Invisalign is whether it hurts to wear the aligners. For people who are familiar with traditional orthodontic treatment, it’s easy to associate every oral appliance with discomfort or pain. Fortunately, Invisalign aligners are customized to fit your mouth and made from smooth plastic, allowing for a more comfortable solution than metal brackets and wires that can irritate your oral tissues.

Generally, Invisalign treatment isn’t painful; however, patients often report some tenderness and soreness on the first day of a new set of trays. This can be easily combatted by switching your aligners at night so you can sleep through a majority of the adjustment period. You can also take over-the-counter pain medication to ease some of your discomfort. Other than this, Invisalign aligners are said to be significantly more comfortable than traditional braces.

How often do I need to visit my dentist during Invisalign treatment?

After treatment begins, we typically have 1 or 2 appointments early on to check progress and if everything is going smoothly, our next appointment is your final check.

How do I take care of my aligners?

Since your aligners are removable, they’re also easy to maintain. It’s important to regularly clean your trays to prevent bacteria from transferring to your mouth or becoming trapped between your aligners and teeth. Here are some basic aligner maintenance instructions:

  • Every morning and night, brush your aligners using a soft-bristled or electric brush and clear, antibacterial hand soap under cool or lukewarm water.
  • To eliminate bacteria, you can soak your aligners in 3% hydrogen peroxide for 2 minutes after you’ve cleaned them. Be sure to rinse with cool or lukewarm water before placing them in your mouth.

Will I need to wear a retainer after Invisalign treatment?

To maintain the beautiful results, you will wear a retainer for 3 months around the clock after treatment, only taking them out to eat and brush. After that, you will transition to nighttime wear only.
